10th November 2024

Polgwedhen is very pleased to welcome some new arrivals to the lake. We are acting as a 'nursery' for about 200 mirror, common, ghost and grass carp, with a few tench and roach added to the mix. The first batch of 70-80 fish arrived today and here is Chris and family introducing them to the water.

Our guests in the Lodge, Deb and Conrad, witnessed the occasion and everybody is excited about this new venture!

1st January.
Camellias out already. Very early. We usually have to wait until March.

10th January.
The change in the weather from rain to very cold temperatures has brought beautiful, clear twilight skies, like this.

19th January.
We woke up this morning to find the lake completely frozen over. The ice is a least 1cm thick - a bit too thin for skating, but very impressive nevertheless. A very rare occurrence for us down here at Polgwedhen.

Another bonus is the first daffodils of the season - again, these are very early arrivals.

24th February
Whilst working in the garden we were delighted to find an army of frogs.  They have been absent for a few years but now are back in force, since we had the lake renovated and cleared in November.  They are very visible in the  shallows below the water; there are lots of clumps of frog spawn so we shall have lots of tadpoles and eventually more frogs!

We have a question for you this time:

Are you looking up through the snowdrops to the sky?  Or down the bank to a reflection in the water?

5th April 2024

Each week for the past month I have taken a picture of the gunnera to show just how fast they grow!  Gunneras love wet land so this one, sitting on the banks of the lake is very happy.

I will continue to take a picture each week until it's fully grown.

The first swallows have returned to nest at Polgwedhen. They are a welcome sight, especially when feeding over the lake.  Hopefully they will bring better weather with them!

May 2024

From time to time the lake needs clearing, and we just have to get stuck in - sometimes literally. Here we are in full force, with Millie our dog looking on, but not quite brave enough to help.

The flower tubs and veranda rail planters are doing well.  They are not easy to see here because the flowers are still quite small, but they will make a lovely show

This is a close so that you can see how pretty they are

The clearing we did in May has helped the water lilies to expand, and the water is beautifully clear.  We love the big skies in the picture

Love them or hate them our Canada geese are doing so well. We can hardly tell which is the gosling now!

Beautiful Autumn morning.

October 2024
Wild Cornwall - Wheal Coates,  Nr St Agnes Head.

The gunnera is now dying back for winter.  We shall cover the corms to protect them from frost and then in March it will spring into action and start the cycle again.
